Proposal

A prayer-length activation of the synagogue's original purpose.

The proposal approaches the synagogue as a living threshold between history and present responsibility. For a limited period, the space would become perceptible again through prayer, assembly, memory, and a restrained spatial gesture.

The proposal will be submitted by the initiative "Stommeln Synagogue - Reviving Jewish Heritage" to the City of Pulheim as part of the first event.

The correspondence shown here documents the initiative's role in introducing, framing, and advancing the project within the wider revival of Jewish heritage in Stommeln.

Artist

Belu-Simion Fainaru works at the intersection of art, memory, history, and identity.

Fainaru is an artist, curator, educator, and cultural initiator whose work moves between sculpture, installation, text, ritual gesture, and public cultural practice. His projects often use restrained materials and precise spatial situations to make absence, memory, exile, and spiritual searching physically present.

Born in Romania and active in Israel and internationally, he has shaped platforms for contemporary art and dialogue as both an artist and initiator. This double role matters for Stommeln: the proposal is not only an object for a room, but an invitation to re-open a civic and cultural conversation around the synagogue.

In 2026 he represents Israel at the Venice Biennale with Rose of Nothingness, shown in the Arsenale. The Stommeln proposal brings that public artistic position into direct dialogue with a fragile local heritage site, where artistic form, Jewish memory, and municipal responsibility meet.

The correspondence is a conceptual part of the artwork.

The proposal treats communication with the city not as external administration, but as one of the materials of the work. Each message records how the synagogue is negotiated as a public, historical, and spiritual space.
