What happened?

A shocking performance has crossed the boundaries of respect!

The vocal performance "An Uninterpreted Dream is Like an Unread Letter" by Olaf Nicolai took place in the former Synagogue Stommeln, working exclusively with problematic, pre-linguistic sounds:

  • Animal sounds: Cooing, bubbling, snorting – sounds that were historically misused to dehumanize Jews
  • Lamenting sounds: Pleading whimpering that reactivates antisemitic clichés of "Jewish lamenting"
  • Mystifying incomprehensibility: Pre-linguistic sounds that reinforce prejudices about "foreign Jewish practices"
200

Years of Jewish life in Stommeln – destroyed by the Holocaust

1938

Kristallnacht – numerous Synagogues destroyed

2025

Antisemitism at highest level since 1949

This performance exemplifies how unreflected art can reactivate centuries-old antisemitic stereotypes – even unintentionally!

Expert Opinions are Clear

"I also don't understand what such sounds should mean in a former synagogue. [...] On the other hand, one should think before performing such abhorrent sounds in a synagogue."
— Prof. Dr. Jascha Nemtsov, renowned musicologist and expert on Jewish music
"I can certainly understand your concerns regarding a possibly problematic perception of the performance at the specific location of the former synagogue. [...] The historical connection between 'animal sounds' and the dehumanization of Jews is very aptly formulated."
— Daniel Vymyslicky, Department against Antisemitism, NS-DOK Cologne
"Artistic forms of expression and questions of taste can certainly be debated (in the spirit of our Basic Law). However, we can understand your criticism and concerns, especially given the sensitive performance venue."
— Said Koumbaz, Office of the NRW Commissioner for Combating Antisemitism

Why Your Commitment is So Important

Artistic Freedom ≠ Irresponsibility

Art at memorial sites cannot be viewed in isolation from its historical context. Documenta fifteen and other cases show: This is not an isolated case, but a structural problem!

Antisemitism is Increasing

Jewish life is under as much pressure as never since 1949. Precisely for this reason, memorial sites like Synagogue Stommeln need special protection from unreflected art projects.

International Responsibility

Germany bears special historical responsibility. The handling of Jewish memorial sites is observed worldwide. Failure here massively damages Germany's reputation.

Every Voice Counts!

Only together can we ensure that memorial sites receive the respect they deserve.

"Anyone who tolerates or relativizes hatred of Jews endangers the foundation of the Federal Republic."
